Hospital Care and discharge instructions

Breastfeeding

Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first 6 months.

Although breastfeeding is touted as being a natural process, the reality is that many new mother/baby pairs struggle with it. Fortunately, there is a lot of breastfeeding support.

In hospital, the postpartum nurse will provide assistance, and lactation consultants are also available on weekdays. After discharge from the hospital, women can call lactation services for advice at 604-875-2282, or call 604-875-3743 to book an appointment at the Breastfeeding Clinic.

For women with on-going issues, their OB can arrange a referral to the Vancouver Breastfeeding Centre. Their website includes handouts and video resources covering all aspects of breastfeeding.

Donor breast milk may be available, as an alternative to formula, for women whose supply is not adequate. Demand for donor milk often exceeds supply, and priority is given to premature and sick newborns. Mothers with excess breast milk can consider becoming donors to the milk bank.

Mental Health

The postpartum period is a particularly high risk time for mental health issues, ranging from the ‘baby blues’ to major postpartum depression. Maximizing sleep and self care are very important. Resources are available at the Pacific Postpartum Support Society.

When symptoms are interfering with a woman’s ability to function normally in caring for herself and her newborn, it’s time to seek help. Their OB can arrange a referral to Reproductive Mental Health.

Follow-Up

Mothers will typically need to arrange a follow-up visit with their OB 6 weeks after the birth. If an earlier visit is required, instructions for this will be provided at the time of discharge. Some OBs have partnered with midwifery teams for additional postpartum support, and women are encouraged to inquire directly with their OB.

Newborns will typically need to be seen by their family physician within the first week following discharge from hospital. The Pediatrician will send a digital summary of the baby’s hospital records. If there is no family doctor, or for specific issue requiring follow-up, the Pediatrician will arrange follow-up.
